The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration's commitment to securing the safe release of pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area, declaring that his government will not negotiate with terrorists.
The governor made the statement while addressing growing public concern over the fate of the victims and ongoing security challenges in parts of the state. He assured residents that security agencies are working tirelessly to rescue the abductees and restore confidence in public safety.
Oyo Will Not Become Another Chibok
Makinde emphasized that Oyo State would not experience the prolonged tragedy associated with the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls' abduction. According to him, the state government is fully committed to ensuring that the kidnapped pupils and teachers are safely reunited with their families.
The governor explained that the rescue mission is being carefully coordinated to avoid endangering the lives of the victims, many of whom are young children.
He reassured parents and guardians that the government remains focused on securing a successful outcome while maintaining close collaboration with security agencies.
Government Rejects Negotiation with Terrorists
One of the strongest messages from the governor was his rejection of negotiations with terrorists and criminal gangs.
Makinde argued that yielding to the demands of kidnappers would encourage further attacks and undermine the authority of government institutions. He maintained that while saving lives remains a priority, the state must not create incentives for criminal activities.
The governor stressed that security agencies are pursuing alternative strategies aimed at rescuing the victims without empowering criminal networks.
School Security Under Renewed Scrutiny
The abduction has renewed concerns about the safety of schools across Nigeria, especially in rural communities where security infrastructure is often limited.
Parents, teachers, and education stakeholders have called for enhanced security measures, including improved intelligence gathering, deployment of additional security personnel, and stronger community policing initiatives.
Experts warn that repeated attacks on educational institutions could discourage school attendance and negatively impact learning outcomes across affected communities.
Protests Over Insecurity
Residents and civil society groups recently staged protests in Ibadan, demanding urgent government intervention and faster action regarding the rescue operation.
The demonstrators expressed concerns about worsening insecurity and called on authorities to provide more information about efforts being made to secure the release of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
Makinde acknowledged the concerns raised by protesters and stated that citizens have every right to demand accountability from elected leaders.
Challenges Facing Rescue Efforts
Security officials have described the rescue operation as complex due to the difficult terrain and the need to protect the lives of the abducted victims.
Authorities are reportedly relying on intelligence gathering and coordinated security operations to locate and rescue the victims without causing harm.
Despite the challenges, government officials insist that efforts remain ongoing and that all available resources are being deployed toward securing the safe return of the abductees.
Nigeria's Growing Security Challenge
The Oyo school abduction highlights the broader security concerns facing Nigeria. Kidnapping for ransom and attacks on communities have continued to spread beyond traditional hotspots, affecting several regions of the country.
Security experts believe stronger intelligence sharing, increased funding for security agencies, and greater community participation are essential to addressing the crisis.
Many Nigerians are also calling for long-term reforms aimed at tackling the root causes of insecurity, including unemployment, poverty, and weak law enforcement structures.
Hope for a Positive Outcome
As rescue efforts continue, families of the abducted pupils and teachers remain hopeful that government promises will translate into action.
Governor Makinde has assured residents that his administration will continue to pursue every available option to ensure the victims are safely returned home.
For many Nigerians, the incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger security measures and sustainable solutions to the country's growing insecurity challenges.
