The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially produced Hon. Babatunde Olabode Ogunola, popularly known as Tomo, as its flagbearer for the 2027 Ogun West Senatorial District general election following a decisive victory in the party primaries held on May 20, 2026.
The emergence of Hon. Ogunola has generated widespread reactions across Ogun West political circles, with party stakeholders, youth groups, and supporters describing his victory as a significant turning point for the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State.
Hon. Ogunola defeated other aspirants during the keenly contested PDP senatorial primaries conducted under strict party supervision and monitored by delegates from the district. Party officials disclosed that the exercise was peaceful, transparent, and reflective of internal democratic processes within the PDP.
Political observers believe the victory of the former federal lawmaker signals the party’s intention to field experienced and grassroots-oriented candidates capable of challenging rival political parties in the forthcoming election cycle.
Speaking shortly after his emergence, Hon. Ogunola expressed gratitude to party delegates, leaders, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to run an issue-based campaign focused on economic development, youth empowerment, infrastructure renewal, and improved representation for the people of Ogun West.
According to him, the district deserves purposeful leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people over personal interests.
“I am deeply humbled by this victory and the trust the delegates have placed in me. This is not just a personal achievement but a collective mandate for the progress of Ogun West. I remain committed to inclusive representation and people-centered governance,” he stated.
The PDP candidate also called on aggrieved aspirants and party members to unite behind the common goal of reclaiming the senatorial seat for the opposition party in 2027.
Hon. Babatunde Olabode Ogunola is no stranger to Nigerian politics and legislative affairs. He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015, where he represented his federal constituency at the National Assembly. During his tenure, he was known for sponsoring motions and supporting initiatives targeted at community development, youth advancement, and improved federal presence in Ogun communities.
Supporters of the PDP candidate have continued to highlight his legislative experience, accessibility, and grassroots popularity as key factors that influenced his emergence at the primaries.
Several party stakeholders who spoke after the exercise described Ogunola as a bridge-builder with extensive political experience and strong connections across the senatorial district.
A party chieftain from Yewa South noted that the PDP needed a candidate with proven political structure and electoral appeal to confront the realities of the 2027 elections.
“Hon. Ogunola has paid his dues politically. He understands the needs of the people and has the experience required to represent Ogun West effectively at the Senate. The delegates made the right decision,” the party leader said.
The Ogun West Senatorial District remains one of the most politically strategic zones in Ogun State, comprising several local government areas with growing voter populations and increasing political awareness. Analysts predict that the 2027 senatorial contest could become highly competitive as major political parties intensify consultations and grassroots mobilization ahead of the election season.
Political analysts also believe that the PDP may attempt to capitalize on local dissatisfaction over infrastructure deficits, unemployment, and economic hardship to strengthen its chances in the district.
Meanwhile, youth groups and women associations within the PDP have welcomed Ogunola’s emergence, describing him as a politician with approachable leadership qualities and strong understanding of grassroots governance.
Some supporters who gathered after the announcement of the primary results chanted solidarity songs and expressed optimism that the PDP could regain political relevance in Ogun West under his candidacy.
In recent years, Ogun State politics has continued to witness intense rivalry among dominant political parties, especially in key senatorial districts where electoral outcomes are often determined by strategic alliances, party unity, and grassroots acceptance.
Political watchers believe that Hon. Ogunola’s ability to maintain party cohesion after the primaries may play a critical role in determining the PDP’s strength heading into the general election.
There are also expectations that the candidate will soon unveil a comprehensive political agenda outlining his plans for economic growth, security, agricultural development, education, and youth inclusion across Ogun West communities.
Residents in parts of Ogun West have continued to call for stronger federal representation capable of attracting developmental projects and addressing longstanding concerns affecting rural communities.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum, the emergence of Hon. Babatunde Olabode Ogunola (Tomo) has undoubtedly positioned him as one of the major political figures to watch in Ogun State politics.
With campaigns expected to intensify in the coming months, political stakeholders across the district will closely monitor how the PDP candidate consolidates support, builds alliances, and presents his vision to the electorate.
For now, PDP supporters in Ogun West appear energized by the outcome of the primaries, expressing confidence that Hon. Ogunola’s experience and political pedigree could boost the party’s chances in the highly anticipated 2027 senatorial election.
