In a major victory for Nigeria’s security forces, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a notorious drug trafficker who had been on the run for over 15 years. The arrest marks a critical blow against organised drug syndicates and demonstrates the agency’s relentless commitment to fighting narcotics and transnational crime.

The suspect, Uzoma Valentine Ilomuanya, 58, was apprehended in Lagos after a meticulous, intelligence-led operation by the NDLEA. This arrest brings an end to one of Nigeria’s longest manhunts, involving extensive collaboration with both local and international law enforcement agencies.

A Fugitive No Longer

Ilomuanya’s criminal activities date back to the early 2000s, including a conviction for drug trafficking in the United Kingdom. After serving part of his sentence, he absconded and returned to Nigeria, where he allegedly rebuilt a clandestine methamphetamine production and distribution network spanning Imo State and Lagos.

In 2018, NDLEA operatives discovered 78 kilograms of methamphetamine and sophisticated drug production equipment linked to him. Following this discovery, he evaded capture for years, making him a prime target for the agency’s Special Operations Unit.

NDLEA’s Intelligence and International Cooperation

The operation demonstrates NDLEA’s growing strength in intelligence-led enforcement. NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the arrest as a “landmark achievement” that sends a strong signal to other fugitives: justice will prevail, no matter how long the pursuit.

Marwa highlighted that international collaboration and information-sharing have become vital tools in tackling drug trafficking networks, ensuring Nigeria remains a formidable force against transnational syndicates.

Ongoing Crackdown on Organised Drug Syndicates

  • Earlier in March 2026, NDLEA detained another fugitive kingpin, Reginald Peter Chidiebere, who had evaded authorities for over a decade, linked to heroin and cocaine trafficking.
  • NDLEA’s consistent apprehension of long-running fugitives underscores the agency’s enhanced operational capacity and intelligence capabilities.

These arrests reflect the agency’s commitment to protecting communities from the dangers of illicit drugs while dismantling organised networks that threaten national security.

Implications for Nigeria’s Security Landscape

For Nigerians, Ilomuanya’s arrest reinforces that no fugitive is beyond the reach of the law. NDLEA continues to strengthen its strategies to combat drug trafficking, ensuring communities remain safer and drug distribution channels are systematically disrupted.
