In a decisive move to protect vulnerable children and mothers, the Gombe State Government has launched a major crackdown on the diversion and misuse of life-saving nutrition supplies in hospitals. This bold intervention signals a new era of accountability in public health, as the state intensifies efforts to combat malnutrition in Nigeria.

A Task Force With Teeth:

On Tuesday the 3rd of March, 2026, the Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manassah Daniel Jatau, inaugurated a 19-member task force charged with a clear mandate: To eliminate the diversion, hoarding, theft, and misuse of nutrition based commodities across health facilities in the state.

The task force will:

  • Keep hospitals and primary healthcare centres under supervision
  • Inspect storage facilities to ensure compliance to the state laws
  • Investigate allegations of diversion and theft
  • Recommend strict sanctions for offenders
  • Strengthen transparency and supply chain accountability

This move comes amid growing concerns that Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and other essential nutrition commodities meant for malnourished children were being diverted or sold illegally instead of reaching intended beneficiaries.

 UNICEF Backs the Initiative

Officials from UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office have commended Gombe State for taking proactive steps to safeguard therapeutic nutrition supplies funded through global child health initiatives.

These nutrition supplies are not ordinary food items, they are medical interventions for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). When diverted, the consequences are grave: children remain untreated, recovery rates decline, and public trust in the health system weakens.

By safeguarding these resources, Gombe is reinforcing its commitment to child survival, maternal health, and healthcare system integrity..

Why This Matters for Nigeria

Nigeria continues to face high rates of stunting, wasting, and undernutrition, most especially in the northern states. Nutrition interventions such as RUTF have proven effective in reversing Severe Acute Malnutrition, but only when they reach the children who need them.

Diversion of medical supplies not only undermines public health goals but also weakens donor confidence and government credibility. With this new task force, Gombe State is setting a precedent in health governance, anti-corruption in healthcare, and nutrition security.

 Strengthening Systems for Long-Term Impact

Experts have also noted that addressing the issue of diversion requires more than just surveillance; rather, it requires fundamental reforms. For example, digitized systems of inventory, real-time monitoring of nutrition commodities, and periodic public reporting can minimize diversion. By incorporating data-driven monitoring technologies into the government’s health system, the government can enhance forecasting, minimize stock-outs, and detect anomalies in real-time.

Capacity building of health staff is also likely to be essential. Such training can include ethical standards, supply chain management, and documentation processes. By addressing these loopholes, the government can ensure minimal cases of diversion. With successful reforms, Gombe can emerge as a role model in Nigeria, motivating other regions in the fight against malnutrition.

Community Vigilance:

Another factor that experts are emphasizing is that community vigilance will be vital for the initiative’s success. For instance, civil society organizations and even caregivers are encouraged to report suspicious activities regarding nutrition commodities.

The initiative could also be enhanced by transparency hotlines and internal audits so that every sachet of therapeutic food is delivered to a malnourished child. This will not only be a government initiative but also a community responsibility

A Turning Point for Health Accountability

This development marks more than just the formation of a committee. It represents a strong statement that nutrition supplies are not for sale, and public health resources will be protected.

As Nigeria pushes toward improved child health outcomes and sustainable development goals, initiatives like this demonstrate that real change starts with transparency, enforcement, and political will.

For families battling malnutrition, this move offers renewed hope that life-saving therapeutic foods will reach hospital shelves  and more importantly  the children whose futures depend on them.
