The All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections following the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), with party leaders expressing confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s record in office will secure him a second term.

The inauguration took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The event brought together senior government officials, APC leaders, state governors and prominent politicians from other political parties in a major demonstration of support for the President’s re-election ambition.

The development marks a significant step in the ruling party’s efforts to organise its campaign machinery ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The APC intends to make the administration’s economic reforms, infrastructure projects and development programmes central to its campaign message.

However, the party faces the challenge of convincing Nigerians that its policies are producing sufficient improvements in living standards amid continuing concerns about the cost of living, employment, insecurity and access to essential services.

APC Campaign Council Targets Nationwide Mobilisation

President Tinubu inaugurated the Presidential Campaign Council and urged its members to demonstrate unity, discipline and commitment as they work towards the 2027 election.

The President also emphasised that political campaigning should not interfere with the responsibilities of government. He indicated that he would continue to focus on governance while making time to communicate directly with Nigerians during the campaign period.

The council includes prominent figures in the administration and the ruling party. Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda were among the senior officials present at the inauguration.

Former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari is serving as Director-General of the campaign council, while Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is the council’s secretary.

The expanded structure is expected to coordinate political mobilisation, public communication, grassroots engagement and campaign activities across the country.

For the APC, the immediate objective is to translate the support of political leaders into votes at polling units. The party’s leadership has made it clear that campaign officials will be judged by their ability to deliver results in their respective states and constituencies.

Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Take Centre Stage

A major part of the APC’s re-election strategy will revolve around the performance of the Tinubu administration since taking office in 2023.

The party has defended the government’s economic reforms and argued that the policies are necessary to address structural weaknesses in the Nigerian economy and establish a foundation for sustainable growth.

APC leaders have highlighted investments in roads, railways, ports, gas infrastructure, agriculture and digital connectivity as evidence of the administration’s development priorities.

Speaking at the inauguration, Yilwatda urged campaign council members to explain how completed and ongoing infrastructure projects could improve productivity, stimulate commerce and create employment opportunities.

He also acknowledged the importance of discussing areas where the administration continues to face challenges.

This approach will be important as the Tinubu 2027 re-election campaign gathers momentum. Nigerians will be looking beyond political speeches to assess whether government policies are delivering tangible benefits to households, businesses, farmers, transport operators and young people entering the labour market.

The removal of petrol subsidies, foreign exchange reforms and other major policy changes have remained important subjects in the national economic debate. While supporters argue that such measures can improve fiscal sustainability and attract investment, critics point to their effects on transportation costs, food prices and household purchasing power.

The APC will therefore need to explain not only why the reforms were introduced but also how their benefits will reach ordinary Nigerians.

Wike, Adeleke and Soludo Join the Expanded Coalition

One of the most notable developments surrounding the inauguration was the participation of prominent political figures associated with parties other than the APC.

Among them were Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Their involvement has added a new dimension to the political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike pledged to support Tinubu’s re-election effort in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. Adeleke also expressed support for allowing the President more time to implement his policies, while Soludo argued that political cooperation could support continuity in government.

The APC has presented the participation of these figures as evidence of a broad political coalition behind the President.

Nevertheless, the presence of prominent politicians at a campaign event does not automatically guarantee electoral success. Their influence will depend on their ability to mobilise supporters, maintain local political relationships and persuade voters to support the APC presidential candidate.

The expanded council may also face questions about how politicians with different party affiliations and political interests will coordinate their activities throughout the campaign.

Shettima Criticises Opposition Economic Proposals

Vice President Kashim Shettima used his remarks at the inauguration to criticise opposition politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

Shettima questioned aspects of their economic arguments and challenged their proposals on issues such as petrol subsidies, economic management and comparisons between Nigeria and other countries.

His comments reflect the increasingly competitive political debate surrounding economic policy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Opposition politicians, meanwhile, have continued to challenge the administration’s record, arguing that economic hardship and insecurity remain serious problems for the country.

The disagreement highlights an important issue for voters: the election is likely to involve competing explanations of Nigeria’s economic difficulties and different proposals for addressing them.

For the APC, defending the administration’s record will require credible information about policy implementation, economic performance and improvements in public services. Opposition parties will also need to present clear, practical alternatives rather than relying solely on criticism of the government.

Ultimately, voters will determine which arguments best address their concerns.

Atiku and Makinde’s Camp Question the APC’s Claims

The inauguration has also attracted criticism from opposition figures.

Atiku Abubakar, through his spokesman Phrank Shaibu, argued that the size of the campaign council could not erase the economic difficulties experienced by Nigerians. He also raised concerns about the use of the Presidential Villa for a party political event.

His response underlines the opposition’s intention to make economic hardship and public accountability central issues in the election campaign.

Separately, the campaign organisation associated with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde criticised the expanded APC council, questioning whether its political alliances could overcome concerns about insecurity, unemployment, education and the cost of living.

These criticisms demonstrate that the 2027 election debate will not be limited to the number of governors, ministers or political leaders supporting each candidate.

The APC will seek to demonstrate continuity and defend its policy choices. Its opponents will attempt to persuade voters that a change of leadership or policy direction offers a better path forward.

The strength of either position will ultimately depend on the credibility of its evidence and the practical relevance of its proposals to Nigerians.

Can the APC Turn Political Alliances into Votes?

The expanded Presidential Campaign Council gives the APC a substantial political structure for coordinating its re-election campaign. The participation of governors and influential politicians from different parties could provide access to additional networks and strengthen its mobilisation efforts in several states.

However, political alliances are only one part of an election strategy.

Nigeria’s electorate includes voters whose decisions are shaped by food prices, fuel costs, employment opportunities, security, education, healthcare and the performance of public institutions. Many will also consider the credibility of candidates, the quality of campaign promises and the extent to which political parties address local concerns.

For the ruling party, the challenge will be to connect its national policy agenda with the everyday experiences of citizens. Infrastructure announcements and economic statistics may form part of the campaign message, but voters will also want to understand how those developments affect their communities.

The opposition, for its part, will need to show how its alternatives could improve living conditions and how proposed policies would be funded and implemented.

The electoral significance of the new campaign council will therefore become clearer as its members begin grassroots engagements and communicate their plans to voters.

2027 Election: Accountability Remains Central

With the inauguration completed, attention is expected to shift towards campaign coordination, political rallies and efforts to build support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC is positioning Tinubu’s record and reform agenda as the foundation of its re-election bid. The expanded council is intended to strengthen that message and demonstrate that the President has support beyond the traditional boundaries of his party.

Nevertheless, electoral success cannot be determined by political endorsements alone. The ruling party must convince Nigerians that its achievements justify another term, while opposition parties must demonstrate that their proposed alternatives are realistic and capable of addressing the country’s problems.

As political activities intensify, the most important question will be whether competing parties can offer credible solutions to Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

For Nigerian voters, the 2027 presidential election will provide another opportunity to assess the government’s record, compare policy proposals and decide which leadership direction best serves the country’s future.
