Dangote, Marketers Cut Petrol Prices as Crude Oil Falls

Dangote Refinery and petrol price reduction as crude oil prices fall in Nigeria
  Premium News Naija

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other petroleum marketers have reduced their petrol prices at major depots across Nigeria following a decline in international crude oil prices.

The latest adjustment is expected to attract attention from motorists, transport operators, businesses and other consumers as changes in wholesale fuel prices gradually filter through the downstream petroleum market.

According to the latest depot price report, the biggest reductions were recorded in Lagos, where several marketers lowered their Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices by between N20 and N25 per litre. The development came as international crude oil benchmarks declined, with Brent crude trading below $100 per barrel.

Dangote Refinery Cuts Petrol Price to N1,325

The Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price from N1,350 to N1,325 per litre in Lagos, representing a N25 reduction.

Other major petroleum marketers also adjusted their depot prices downward. Ascon, Integrated, Pinnacle and Sahara reduced their prices by N24, with their products selling within the N1,326 to N1,327 per litre range.

MRS also reduced its petrol price by N20 to N1,332 per litre, while Wosbab was listed at N1,330 per litre.

The reductions indicate that movements in the global crude oil market are beginning to influence wholesale petroleum prices in Nigeria.

Crude Oil Prices Decline

The latest petrol price reduction in Nigeria coincided with a decline in international crude oil prices.

Brent crude fell below the $100-per-barrel mark, while West Texas Intermediate, the United States crude benchmark, declined to $91.17 per barrel.

Crude oil prices remain an important factor in the petroleum products market because they influence the economics of refining and the cost of imported refined products.

However, changes in international crude prices do not necessarily translate immediately into identical changes at filling stations. Other factors, including the naira exchange rate, transportation expenses, storage costs, supply conditions and marketers' margins, can influence retail fuel prices.

Petrol Prices Fall in Other Cities

The downward movement was also recorded outside Lagos.

In Port Harcourt, Masters reduced its PMS price by N2 to N1,328 per litre, while Stockgap reduced its price by N7 to N1,323. Bulk Strategic and Sigmund listed petrol at N1,328 per litre, while Matrix maintained N1,330.

Calabar also recorded reductions. Mainland reduced its petrol price by N7 to N1,320 per litre, while Alkanes reduced its price by N2 to N1,325.

In Warri, Keonamex reduced its PMS price by N3 to N1,327 per litre. Nepal and Prudent also reduced their prices to N1,329 and N1,328 respectively.

However, the market did not move uniformly across all marketers. Some operators recorded marginal increases, highlighting the role of individual supply conditions and pricing decisions in the downstream market.

Diesel Prices Also Record Reductions

The latest price movement was not limited to petrol. Some marketers also reduced the prices of automotive gas oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.

In Lagos, Chipet reduced its diesel price by N15 to N1,815 per litre, while Ascon, Duport and Integrated each reduced their prices by N5 to the same level.

Other marketers, including Ibachem, Ibeto, Dangote, Obat and Pinnacle, offered diesel within the N1,815 to N1,860 per litre range.

Port Harcourt recorded a larger reduction, with Masters cutting its AGO price by N35 to N1,900 per litre.

In Warri, Matrix reduced its diesel price by N50 to N2,000 per litre, while Prudent and Rain Oil reduced their prices by N10 to N1,940.

Diesel prices are particularly important to businesses because many manufacturers, logistics companies, telecommunications operators and small businesses depend on diesel-powered generators and equipment.

Will Petrol Pump Prices Fall Further?

One of the major questions for consumers is whether the reduction in petrol depot prices will lead to lower pump prices across Nigeria.

Retail fuel prices can vary from one location to another because filling stations have different transportation costs, operating expenses, supply arrangements and profit margins.

Nevertheless, sustained reductions at the wholesale level could create room for some filling stations to reduce their pump prices as they replenish their inventories at lower costs.

The latest report indicates that petrol is currently selling at different prices across locations, with retail prices influenced by local market conditions.

Impact on Nigerian Businesses and Consumers

A sustained decline in fuel prices could have wider implications for the Nigerian economy.

Transportation operators are among the businesses most directly affected by petrol prices. A reduction in fuel costs could help ease some operating expenses for commercial transport operators, logistics companies and businesses that depend heavily on road transportation.

Households could also benefit if lower wholesale prices are sustained and eventually passed on to consumers at filling stations.

However, the overall impact will depend on the direction of crude oil prices, the foreign exchange market and other costs associated with petroleum distribution.

Local Refining Gains More Attention

The latest development also highlights the growing importance of local refining in Nigeria.

The Dangote Refinery has become a major participant in the domestic petroleum products market, while petroleum marketers continue to assess the relative cost of locally refined products and imported alternatives.

Greater availability of locally refined petrol could increase competition among suppliers and potentially improve supply efficiency within the Nigerian downstream petroleum sector.

For consumers, the key issue remains whether increased domestic refining capacity can contribute to more stable and predictable fuel prices over time.

What Happens Next?

The direction of the Nigeria petrol price market will depend on several factors, including international crude oil prices, the naira exchange rate, refining costs, domestic supply and demand, transportation expenses and competition among petroleum marketers.

For now, the latest reduction by Dangote Refinery and other marketers represents a notable change in the wholesale petroleum market.

Motorists and businesses will be watching closely to see whether the lower depot prices translate into further reductions at filling stations across the country.

As the Nigerian downstream oil sector continues to adjust to changing global and domestic market conditions, developments in crude oil prices and local refining will remain important factors in determining the cost of petrol and diesel.
