Adeleke Defeats Oyebamiji as Accord Party Dominates 19 LGAs in Historic Osun Governorship Election

Governor Ademola Adeleke has emerged victorious in the 2026 Osun State governorship election after winning 19 of the state's 30 local government areas, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The election, which attracted nationwide attention, was one of the most fiercely contested governorship elections in recent years. It served not only as a referendum on the performance of the incumbent administration but also as a major political indicator ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.

Official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that Adeleke's Accord Party won the majority of local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11 LGAs. The outcome reinforced Adeleke's political influence across key voting blocs in the state. 

A Victory Built on Strategic Strongholds

Political analysts had identified several battleground local government areas before the election, predicting that the eventual winner would need to dominate strategic regions across Osun State. Those predictions ultimately proved accurate. 

Adeleke recorded impressive performances in several traditional strongholds, including Ede North, Ede South, Iwo, Ife East, Ife North, Osogbo, Oriade, and Irepodun.

Earlier provisional results had already suggested that the incumbent governor was building a significant advantage across multiple local government areas. As additional results were uploaded and verified, his lead became increasingly difficult for opposition candidates to overcome. 

The victory demonstrates the effectiveness of the Accord Party's grassroots political structure and its ability to mobilize voters throughout the state.

APC's Oyebamiji Records Strong Opposition Performance

Although he failed to win the election, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji delivered a competitive campaign that enabled his party to secure 11 local government areas.

Throughout the campaign, the APC consistently maintained that it would unseat Adeleke and reclaim the Osun Government House. Party leaders intensified consultations, expanded campaign activities, and strengthened their presence across several communities in the weeks leading up to the election. 

Political observers believe that Oyebamiji's performance confirms that the APC remains a major political force in Osun State despite the election outcome.

In some APC strongholds, the party demonstrated its organizational strength. For example, Oyebamiji won the polling unit associated with one of the party's founding leaders, former Governor Bisi Akande, highlighting the continued influence of established APC political structures. 

Technology Continues to Transform Nigerian Elections

Another important lesson from the election was the growing role of technology in improving transparency.

INEC continued using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to authenticate voters and publish election results.

The increased use of technology enabled voters, journalists, election observers, and political parties to monitor the electoral process more effectively than in previous election cycles.

Despite isolated technical difficulties, the digital transmission system represented another significant step toward improving public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process. 

Vote-Buying Allegations Overshadow the Election

While many observers praised the enthusiasm displayed by voters, allegations of vote-buying once again dominated post-election discussions.

Several election observers reported incidents involving financial inducements in different polling units across the state.

Some reports suggested that voters in certain communities received cash incentives in exchange for political support. Civil society organizations also documented multiple suspected cases of vote trading during the election. 

These allegations have renewed calls for electoral reforms and stricter enforcement of existing laws designed to protect the integrity of Nigeria's democratic process.

Violence and Security Concerns Raise Fresh Questions

Security concerns also affected the election.

Reports of gunshots, attempted ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, and attacks on election officials emerged from several communities.

Election monitoring organizations documented isolated incidents involving political thugs, while security agencies intervened in some locations to restore order. Several incidents reportedly disrupted voting and result collation in parts of the state. 

Although the election was largely peaceful in many areas, the reported incidents have intensified discussions about improving election security before the 2027 general elections.

What Adeleke's Victory Means for 2027

The political implications of Adeleke's victory extend far beyond Osun State.

Many political analysts believe that the election will influence political alliances, campaign strategies, party coalitions, and voter mobilization efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The election has also demonstrated the importance of grassroots politics, effective campaign messaging, digital election monitoring, and strong local political structures.

For the Accord Party, the victory represents a significant political achievement. For the APC, it serves as a reminder that rebuilding and strengthening local political networks will be essential before the next electoral cycle.

As reactions continue to pour in from political stakeholders across Nigeria, one thing remains clear: the 2026 Osun governorship election will remain one of the country's most significant political contests in recent history.
