ILARO, OGUN STATE – Prominent leaders, political stakeholders, youth representatives, professionals, and community advocates from Ogun West converged in Ilaro on Thursday, 2nd July, 2027 for a Stakeholders' Conference, where they unanimously rejected what they described as the alleged imposition of a non-indigene of Ogun State as the governorship candidate of a political party for the 2027 general elections.
The conference, which focused on the political future of Ogun West and the broader development of Ogun State, provided a platform for participants to deliberate on issues of equity, justice, fairness, and inclusive governance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, participants expressed concern over reports suggesting that a political party may present a governorship candidate who is not an indigene of Ogun State. The stakeholders described such a move as an affront to the collective historical identity of the people and a departure from the principles that have guided the state's democratic evolution.
According to speakers at the conference, the people of Ogun West have consistently demonstrated loyalty to democratic ideals and have contributed significantly to the political and economic development of Ogun State since its creation in 1976.
They argued that despite these contributions, Ogun West remains the only senatorial district yet to produce an elected governor in nearly five decades of the state's existence.
The stakeholders maintained that this longstanding political imbalance should not become a justification for introducing what they described as another layer of injustice through the emergence of a non-indigene as a governorship candidate.
They emphasized that while every Nigerian has constitutional rights, political parties must also respect the history, identity, and aspirations of the people they seek to govern.
"Our struggle is not against any individual but against any action capable of undermining the political identity and historical heritage of Ogun State," one of the speakers stated.
The conference further called on political parties to uphold internal democracy, transparency, and fairness in the selection of candidates for the 2027 governorship election.
Among those in attendance was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ogun West Senatorial Candidate in the coming general election, Hon. Babatunde Ogunola (Tomo), who lent his voice to the concerns expressed by the gathering.
Addressing participants, Ogunola cautioned against what he described as political rascality capable of undermining democratic values and peaceful political participation within Ogun West and Ogun State.
He stressed that politics should be driven by justice, fairness, competence, and respect for the people rather than decisions perceived as impositions.
Other stakeholders echoed similar concerns, insisting that Ogun West deserves equitable political representation after decades of waiting for the opportunity to produce the state's governor.
Participants noted that the issue goes beyond partisan politics and reflects a broader conversation about fairness, inclusion, zoning, and balanced political development across Ogun State's three senatorial districts.
The stakeholders also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups, and political actors to continue advocating peaceful engagement while protecting the democratic rights and aspirations of the people.
They reaffirmed their commitment to lawful political participation and urged residents of Ogun West to remain united in pursuing what they described as a just and equitable political future.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, observers believe debates surrounding equity, zoning, inclusiveness, and political representation will remain central to Ogun State's political discourse.
