A peace mission aimed at ending violence in Zamfara State has ended in tragedy after a notorious bandit commander allegedly kidnapped 50 elderly community leaders who visited him for reconciliation discussions.
The shocking incident occurred in Magamin Diddi community in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, further exposing the dangers associated with informal negotiations with armed criminal groups operating across northern Nigeria.
According to reports from local authorities and community leaders, the elders embarked on the mission after receiving indications that the notorious bandit kingpin, identified as Jammo, was interested in pursuing peace with residents of the area.
The delegation, made up largely of respected elders and community representatives, reportedly traveled into the forest to engage the bandit leader in discussions aimed at restoring peace and reducing attacks on local communities.
However, instead of productive dialogue, the meeting reportedly turned into a hostage situation.
Peace Initiative Ends in Captivity
Community sources disclosed that shortly after arriving at the meeting location, the elders were allegedly seized by Jammo and his fighters.
The incident has generated outrage and renewed concerns about the growing insecurity in Zamfara State, where communities continue to face threats from armed bandits responsible for kidnappings, killings, and attacks on villages.
Many residents had hoped that dialogue could provide relief from years of violence, but the latest development has reinforced fears about trusting criminal groups that have repeatedly violated agreements in the past.
Government Distances Itself from Negotiations
Reacting to the development, Chairman of Maradun Local Government Area, Hon. Bello Dosara, clarified that the reconciliation effort was not sanctioned by the government.
According to him, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has consistently maintained its opposition to negotiating with bandits and has never endorsed reconciliation arrangements with criminal groups.
Dosara emphasized that the elders undertook the mission independently and without official approval.
He further stated that the government remains committed to strengthening security measures and has continued providing security escorts to enable residents access markets and conduct their daily activities despite persistent threats from bandit groups.
Eleven Released, Thirty-Nine Remain in Captivity
While the situation remains tense, authorities confirmed that 11 members of the delegation have since regained their freedom.
Reports indicate that the released individuals were allowed to return to their communities to relay information regarding the conditions being set by the bandit leader.
Despite the release of the 11 elders, 39 others remain in captivity, raising serious concerns among families and community members who are anxiously awaiting their safe return.
The continued detention of the elderly hostages has heightened fears across the region, with residents calling for urgent intervention by security agencies.
₦24 Million Demand Linked to Seized Weapons

Residents are also calling on federal and state authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve security presence in vulnerable communities, and accelerate efforts to rescue the remaining hostages.
