The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as rival factions aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and former Minister Tanimu Turaki unveiled separate candidates for the 2027 general elections. The development has further exposed deep divisions within Nigeria's main opposition party and raised fresh concerns about its preparedness for the next electoral cycle.

The political standoff reached a new level on Wednesday when both factions held parallel events in Abuja to present certificates of return and nomination documents to their candidates. Each group insisted it represented the legitimate leadership of the PDP and expressed confidence that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would recognize its nominees.

Parallel Candidate Presentations Deepen Crisis

At the PDP's 109th National Executive Committee meeting at Wadata Plaza, the Wike-backed faction rallied party members and officially unveiled its candidates for the 2027 elections. During the event, Wike urged members to stop complaining about losing political power and instead focus on grassroots mobilization and electoral victories.

The faction subsequently presented certificates of return to its presidential candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, alongside governorship and legislative candidates from various states.

Meanwhile, the Tanimu Turaki-led faction held a separate stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, where it also unveiled candidates for elective positions nationwide. Turaki stated that the group had successfully screened and approved candidates for governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly positions across the country.

Jonathan Factor Sparks More Controversy

A major point of disagreement between the rival camps remains the presidential ticket. While the Wike-backed faction endorsed Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate, the Turaki-led group continued to push former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 election.

The Turaki faction had earlier ratified Jonathan as its presidential candidate during a convention held in Abuja. However, Jonathan has yet to publicly declare interest in the race, creating uncertainty around the nomination.

Reacting to the development, Wike criticized attempts to project Jonathan as a presidential candidate without his clear consent, arguing that no individual can be drafted into an election without openly expressing interest.

INEC Recognition Becomes Key Battlefront

Both factions are now focused on securing recognition from INEC ahead of the official submission of candidates' names. The development comes just before the electoral body releases access codes to political parties for uploading candidates' details for the 2027 elections.

Wike expressed confidence that INEC would ultimately recognize the leadership structure aligned with his faction. Similarly, the Turaki camp insists that its internal processes complied with all necessary requirements and that its candidates remain valid contenders.

Implications for PDP's Future

Political analysts warn that the prolonged leadership battle could weaken the PDP's ability to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections. Internal divisions often create uncertainty among party supporters and may discourage potential voters seeking a united opposition platform.

The crisis also threatens to trigger legal battles over candidate legitimacy, party leadership, and electoral recognition. Unless reconciliation efforts succeed, the PDP could face a prolonged period of instability at a time when political parties are expected to consolidate their structures ahead of the next general elections.

Despite calls from party elders for unity, neither faction appears willing to back down. The coming months are expected to witness intense political negotiations, court actions, and strategic maneuvering as both camps seek control of the PDP machinery.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The emergence of parallel candidates underscores the depth of the PDP's leadership crisis and highlights the challenges facing Nigeria's leading opposition party. Whether the party can overcome its internal divisions and present a united front before the 2027 elections remains uncertain.

For now, the battle between the Wike and Turaki camps has become one of the defining political stories shaping Nigeria's political future. As INEC prepares for the next phase of the electoral process, all eyes will remain on the PDP and its efforts to resolve one of the most serious crises in its history.
