Anambra State has once again been thrust into the spotlight over security concerns following a deadly attack on the convoy of Governor Charles Soludo’s Chief of Staff, Ben Nwankwo. The incident, which occurred along the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma axis in Orumba North Local Government Area, left police officers and civilians dead, while raising fresh questions about the activities of armed criminal groups operating within the South-East.

According to reports, the convoy was returning from an official assignment on Sunday night when gunmen launched an ambush from a nearby bush. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire on the convoy, triggering a fierce gun battle that lasted several minutes and sent residents and road users fleeing for safety.

While the Chief of Staff reportedly escaped unharmed, the attack claimed the lives of at least two police officers attached to the convoy. Other reports indicated that civilians travelling with the delegation were also killed or injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The attack represents one of the most serious assaults on a high-profile government convoy in Anambra in recent months. Security experts say the incident underscores the continuing threat posed by armed criminal elements despite improvements in security reported by the state government over the past year.

Following the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the deaths of the officers and announced an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators. Security formations across the state have reportedly been placed on high alert as investigators work to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Anambra State Government also condemned the attack, describing it as an assault not only on government officials but on the peace and stability of the state. Officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

Governor Charles Soludo's administration has consistently highlighted security as one of its top priorities. Since assuming office, the governor has invested in various security initiatives aimed at combating violent crime, kidnapping, and attacks on public infrastructure. However, sporadic incidents such as this latest ambush demonstrate the challenges security agencies continue to face in parts of the South-East.

Residents of the affected communities reported hearing prolonged gunfire on the night of the attack. Some travellers reportedly abandoned their vehicles and sought refuge in nearby villages as panic spread across the area. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers may have carefully planned the operation, taking advantage of the isolated nature of the road corridor.

Security analysts believe the latest attack could prompt renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, enhanced surveillance technology, and greater collaboration between federal and state security agencies. The South-East region has witnessed several violent incidents targeting security personnel and government assets in recent years, creating pressure on authorities to improve response capabilities.

The killing of police officers in the line of duty has also reignited concerns about the risks faced by security personnel protecting public officials and communities. Law enforcement agencies across Nigeria continue to confront armed groups that often operate with sophisticated weapons and knowledge of local terrain.

For many residents of Anambra, the incident serves as a reminder that sustaining peace requires continuous vigilance. While government officials insist that security gains achieved over the past year remain intact, citizens are demanding swift action to ensure that those responsible for the attack are arrested and prosecuted.

As investigations continue, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how security agencies respond and whether the perpetrators can be tracked down quickly. The outcome may significantly influence public confidence in ongoing efforts to restore lasting security across Anambra State and the wider South-East region.
