Residents of Maiduguri in Borno State were thrown into panic early Monday after suspected terrorists launched an attack on a community within the city.
The incident triggered widespread fear as gunshots and explosions echoed across parts of the Borno State capital during the early hours of the morning. Security authorities later confirmed that the attackers attempted to infiltrate neighborhoods around Ajilari Cross, Dala, and Bulamari areas before security forces intervened.
According to local sources, residents woke up to intense gunfire that lasted for several minutes, prompting many families to remain indoors while security personnel moved swiftly to confront the attackers.
The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the attempted attack and reassured residents that the situation had been brought under control.
Security agencies, including the Nigerian military, police, Civil Defence Corps, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, reportedly responded quickly after receiving distress calls from residents.
The coordinated security response led to a gun battle between troops and the suspected terrorists, forcing the attackers to retreat from the community.
Officials said the swift intervention prevented what could have escalated into a larger tragedy in the densely populated areas of Maiduguri.
Residents later reported seeing security patrol vehicles moving through several streets while authorities carried out clearance operations to ensure the attackers had fully withdrawn.
Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere during the attack as tense and frightening. Many residents said they initially feared the terrorists had successfully entered the city.
“We heard several gunshots and explosions. Everyone stayed indoors because nobody knew what was happening,” a resident said.
Some families reportedly spent the night awake, monitoring the situation while security forces secured the affected areas.
By morning, normal activities slowly began to resume as residents gained confidence that security forces had regained full control of the area.
Borno State has remained the epicenter of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency involving terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
For more than a decade, insurgent groups have targeted communities, security formations, and public infrastructure across parts of northeastern Nigeria.
Although the Nigerian military has recorded several victories against insurgents in recent years, security analysts say militants still retain the ability to launch surprise attacks, particularly in rural communities and outskirts of major towns.
The latest attack in Maiduguri highlights the continuing security challenges faced by communities in Borno State despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks.
The Nigerian Armed Forces have continued to intensify counter-terrorism operations across the Northeast under ongoing security missions aimed at eliminating insurgent strongholds.
Security experts say intelligence gathering, improved surveillance, and cooperation between the military and local vigilante groups have played a significant role in preventing many attacks in recent months.
Authorities also emphasized the importance of community support in identifying suspicious activities that could help security agencies prevent future attacks.
Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report unusual movements or suspicious individuals to security agencies.
While the situation in Maiduguri has returned to relative calm, security forces say patrols and monitoring activities have been intensified across the city and surrounding communities to prevent further attempts by insurgents.
For many residents of Borno State, the hope remains that sustained security operations and stronger intelligence networks will eventually bring lasting peace to the region.
